Organisations utilise Mobenzi Researcher to undertake a variety of projects and day-to-day activities across a wide range of sectors including health, agriculture, education, conservation, market research and financial services.

A few selected case studies are presented which highlight the possible applications of Mobenzi Researcher, both as a stand-alone solution, as well as the basis for custom functionality via the flexible API.

Jika iMfundo Mobile Relationship Tool

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Jika iMfundo, which means ‘changing education’, is an initiative of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education funded by the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) established by the Minister of Basic Education. Implementation is supported by the Programme to Improve Learning Outcomes (PILO: an NGO team established for this purpose). It is an example of what can be done when South Africa’s government, business, labour and civil society work together across levels on the apex national priority of improving education.

ACT3 (Active Case-finding in Tubercolosis) is a 4 year longitudinal, randomised control trial which aims to monitor TB prevalence and the extent to which this is affected by early diagnosis and referral for treatment.

Supporting the Evaluation of a New TB Diagnostic Tool XTEND

Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Free State and Mpumalanga, South Africa

The XTEND trial (Xpert for TB - Evaluating a New Diagnostic) is a cluster randomised trial (CRT) nested within the NHLS roll out of the Xpert MTB/Rif technology to all laboratories to evaluate Xpert MTB/Rif technology compared with smear microscopy for the diagnosis of TB.

Measuring the Impact of Radio Campaigns on Agricultural Practices

The project, as part of the African Farm Radio Research Initiative (AFRRI), was to measure the impact of a 4-month participatory radio campaign (PRC), collecting 4,500 household surveys across five countries (Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Tanzania, Uganda) in less that one month.

The Tiger Brands Foundation’s Breakfast-feeding Scheme

A programme developed by the Tiger Brands Foundation in the belief that funding and supporting a breakfast-feeding scheme; learners would be better nourished, resulting in improved school performance, growth and development. Mobenzi Researcher was embedded within the operational structure of the project in order to address a number of challenges and provide timeous access to reliable, accurate information.

In a clinical study which has now been replicated twice, the South African Medical Research Council - using the Mobenzi platforms has shown the potential to monitor the effectiveness of the national PMTCT programme in a large random sample of 580 public clinics.

Philani Mentor Mothers Project

The project is concerned with the implementation and evaluation of a community based home-visit intervention programme, whereby unemployed mothers from study neighbourhoods are employed and trained as Mentor Mothers to deliver a series of home-visits to all pregnant and new mothers in their neighbourhoods.

Mobile-assisted Self-interviewing: A Mobile Alternative to ACASI

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

CASI (Computer-assisted Self-interviewing) and ACASI (Audio Computer-assisted Self-interviewing) are research techniques which improve the likelihood of respondents participating openly and honestly on sensitive topics. WhizzKids United used a school facilitator and Mobenzi Researcher to conduct surveys with hundreds of learners in one of the first examples of MASI - Mobile-assisted Self-interviewing.
